An Austen Adventure 2024 open!

Summer 2024 will be here before we are ready. Make your plans now to join us for An Austen Adventure from June 30th - July 6th based in Alton, UK. You can find all the information about the new tour by clicking here.

A few things have changed from our inaugural tour. The group that came had rave reviews as well as great recommendations. One was that we needed to spend an entire day in Bath. There’s too much to see to split it with something else. So, I’ve added a tour of the Jane Austen Centre, as well as a guided tour of all the sites in Bath important to Jane, her family, and her fiction.

The second recommendation was to show more of the sites where the films were made. Based on building a good day, I’ve chosen two sites from the 2005 Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice. This day will allow us to walk the path of the characters from the stories. Since Jane never specified the actual locations of these grand manors, the filmmakers all made their own decisions. We’ll visit one filmmaker’s choices.

And, the last change to the tour is the inclusion of the seaside - Lyme Regis is on the English Channel and was also the home of the “Mother of Peleontology,” Mary Anning. We’ll spend the day exploring the local museum that focuses on both Jane Austen and Mary Anning. Then, we’ll walk the seashore and imagine the swimming machines that women were forced to use in order to swim without scandal. And, we’ll see the site of Louisa’s fall off the Cobb in Persuasion, followed by lunch at a local restaurant with panoramic views of the harbor and the channel.

The tour will still have all of the sites of Alton and Chawton, as well as a day long visit to Winchester. Please think about joining us this summer. We have a limit of 12 people, so register as soon as you can. Email me at joan@nerdstour.com with any questions. If you want to spread out the payments over a couple of months, I’m happy to help with that. Just email me.

I look forward to leading you on an Adventure to get to know Jane and her time. I can’t wait to go back!
